“We all know how to maintain our physical health, and how to practice dental hygiene, right?” he goes on to say we’ve been doing it “since we’re five years old. But what do we know about maintaining our physiological health?”
How is it that we take more time taking care of our teeth than we do our minds? Wellll, hmmmm I’ll have to sit with that question for a bit. This question for me was an eye opener. I find myself to constantly be pursuing avenues to learn and grow, yet this question as all good questions do – got me thinking. Is it perhaps that we weren’t taught about it in school? Is it the jobs of our parents? I’ve been reading a few self-help books…does that count? Watch the video above for some tips and insights of what Dr. Guy Winch has to share on the matter and how this is particular Smart is Sexy topic!
“It is time we closed the gap. Between our physical and psychological health”
We will go to the doctor when we feel like we have a flu or a nagging pain but what about making an appointment when we feel lonely, experience loss, rejection, guilt or heartbreak? Who would you make an appointment with, anyways?! Ahem, a therapist…a psychologist…..a psychiatrist. But that is not second nature to most of us and most often misunderstood. Most of the time our mental health doesn’t even get considered, much less made a priority. Many of us, experience things like pain from sadness… alone. The right coping mechanisms exist, just like the right procedures exist for our physical ailments. Guy Winch makes a compelling case about taking care of our minds with the same diligence we take care of our bodies is this entertaining TED Talk.
