Desert Rain

There is something quite mesmerizing about the desert. My recent trip to Tucson, Arizona had me in awe of it’s dangerous beauty and inhabitants– enough to perplex and get the most cautious person elevating their finger above a teddy bear cactus or running it along a turquoise stone or wishing to see a javelina…that last part might only be me.

I mean, cmon can you blame me — when you have cacti named ‘teddy bears’ everywhere and I’m not suppose to get near them!? Really!? Who names a cactus specie teddy bear!!! Deceptively alluring and I like it!

What you see is never what you get in the desert, the vastness brings a whole new level of being. How small one can  feel amongst the saguaro cacti but also how empowered it can make us feel overlooking it all. At first when I look out into the desert I feel alone…a small, breathing, eating, pooping organism in this world, dependant on so many things it scares me, and the desert reminds me of this….there is no Whole Foods as far as I can see and I forgot my rain stick so I’m probably going to die of dehydration…..damn it…what now, where’s my cell phone?

But wait, if our ancestors made it possible to survive through the desert…I mean, even with natural selection and all, I’m here today…so someone was doing something right! And if people are strong enough to build their lives back from fires, hurricanes, flooding, tornados….what’s stopping me?!

I’m not alone, and I know I’m not the only one feeling this way. The desert reminded me that one moment we can feel connected and empowered then slowly that fear of failure cripples us, and we scale down, dial down our dreams….Why?! Why is that?
