Will it be almond butter or peanut butter?

Team Peanut Butter – Nutritional Content

Peanut butter is quite similar to almond butter in regards to the nutritional label. Justine Campbell, NTP, RD and owner of Alo Wellness in Redlands, CA breaks it down for a serving size of 2 tablespoon, which is give or take 200 calories, 17 grams of fat, 7 grams of carbs, 4 grams of fiber, and about 8 grams of protein. But the difference lies in the amount of vitamin and minerals that peanut butter lacks as opposed to almond butter. It kicks almond butter’s nuts in the daily value amount of B6 at 14%, and 22% of niacin, where almond butter only contains 2% and 5% respectively.

Since the nutritional content is similar per serving size, almond butter is actually more beneficial when trying to consume your minerals and vitamins naturally, it has almost double the amount of magnesium at 28%, and iron at 15%, triple the amount of vitamin E at 28%, four times as much calcium at 9%, and six times as much riboflavin at 12%.

Team Peanut Butter – Fat and Additives

Some fats are good for you, suuuprise!! Yup, certain fats we need in order to be healthy and have proper organ function and a sharp brain that doesn’t take away from our sexy silhouette. Fortunately peanut butter can be one of those but falls short because it has about two times the amount Omega-6 fatty acid than almond butter which Campbell highlights is associated with inflammation and increased risk of heart disease.

nuts for the booty

Peanut butter tends to have many additives if you are not careful, mainly hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup, which you need to make a point to avoid.  Though these additives add sweetness and texture they are a harmful fat- Trans fat. Avoid trans fat and opt for an organic option. When you read the ingredients, the list should be quite simple and short.

Team Almond ButterFats and Additives

Almond butter is loaded with more good fats than bad fats, especially the fat that lowers blood cholesterol called monounsaturated fats. It has about 50% more monounsaturated fats. Even though almond butter isn’t as mainstream as peanut butter it still runs the risk to have additives, especially ones trying to make it sweeter, so still read the label and try to pick organic.
