Hello Santa Barbara

Note to Self: Small Indulgences are Worth It!

At the end of my three-day Santa Barbara getaway, my love and I made our way to the pier to soak in one last sunset. I don’t know when this started but growing up all I can remember are long summers at the beach or vacation beach trips filled with me eating ice cream. Yes, just me eating ice cream, no one else. Eventually a trip to the beach became synonymous with eating ice cream. Luckily for me and my bikini body– ice cream isn’t always readily available….a painful blessing in disguise.

But eating ice cream for me with my toes in the sand or smelling the salt from the ocean while watching the changing colors of the sky reflect across the water makes me happy. I feel pleasure. It is a cheap thrill that is connected to a very innocent feeling of happiness. When I am feeling overwhelmed and need to reboot, this is when I can feel like a kid again…when eating ice cream made the world a better place.

These are little luxuries. Little luxuries that give you meaning. At some point it added value to your life, enough to leave an imprint. The best part about it, is you and only you can visit that feeling, and maybe share that memory.

Pleasure requires presence. Consider it a vital nutrient to your body. There are consequences when you deny yourself the small indulgences. If you deny those periodic moments of pleasure your body accumulates stress hormones. When we have been stressed for too long, we all know that it works against us! Our minds become clouded, and we can eventually even get sick and sometimes we are just royal bitches to those around us! Truth. And you know it!

Take your pleasure seriously!

Sometimes I just have to get my pleasure on and that means– eating my ice cream cone by the beach, even when it’s melting faster than I can eat it and dripping all over my hand… sorry but I’m really not sorry :). That is my little luxury, what is yours?

  1. Babe I’m having a hectic day/life right now..so this post really resonated with me more than any post you’ve written. Especially this line: “Take your pleasure seriously!”

I need to do this more. Lately I haven’t had time for anything fun and I know I am so close to the finish line and bettering myself in my career but I just feel so tired sometimes 🙁

But I can do it, because I have before.

    Love you,

    Sheila
